This invitation is not solely to give a speech. Traditionally commencement speakers are given an doctorate (honoris causae) to do them honor. Thus Notre Dame is HONORING the President. For what reason? His support of embryonic stem cell research? His 100% pro abortion voting record? His support for legislation which will force Catholic hospitals to perform abortions? Also don't let the American bishops off the hook. Their pathetically ambiguous guidance to Catholic voters enabled his election. - Discouraged Catholic

Thank you, William, for the thoughtful article. Also let us remember the 3500 times 40 days or the 140,000 babies sacrificed at the alter of abortion during this Lenten season in the US. So much death. But all are remembered by our Lord. Gob bless you.

"Catholics should never forget, as John Paul the Great memorably put it: the age of the martyrs has returned." Yes. I think the historical anomaly we\ve experienced in this country is coming to an end. Therefore: 'We should not rest easy in distant complacency."

Wonderful article. History is repeating itself much quicker than we ever imagined and we still cannot see it happening. May they rest in peace. - Dan
