Our war helped bring on the devasation to the Assyrians. What will we say to our Lord when he asks,"Why did you ignore the teaching and pleading of my vicar and Peter's successor, Pope John Paul II, as you prepared for war?" So we should indeed support the Assyrians as Christians, while doing penance as Americans. - David

Could the author offer any practical direction for action? Are there any bills pending we could inform our congresspeople we support? Is there specific State Department policy we could indicate our support for? To generically express support for Eastern Christians would, I fear, have little direct impact. - Justin

As Christian citizens in America, we should have listened to the dire warnings that the Holy Father offered on Iraq. It's a disgrace that so many good men like George Wiegel, the late Father Neuhaus, and Michael Novak were God's good servants but the Bush administration's first. I also think whatever chance we had in establishing a culture of life in America (which is the issue I usually associate Mr. Saunders with) was washed away by anger at the mismanaged attempt to bring democracy to Iraq. - Megs
