the next task the pope needs to concentrate on is trying to show how Catholic aid agencies should work in the spirit of Christ. The question that needs to be asked now is how many of the Catholic aid agencies are really Catholic, not only in defining the source of the funds, but in defining the way they work in the day-to-day administration of the various charity programs. I am afraid that as they focus more on money the spirit of Christ will be thrown out with caritas in veritate. - chris rosario

The encyclical is so far above the current economic and political discourse of the mainstream media and academia as to present an unbridgeable gap. The ordinary secular mind when faced with such wisdom must simply surrender. It is time to completely rethink everything we believe about the relationship among man, economics, and technology, with the emphasis on man as Pope Benedict sees him: in relation to the Absolute, whose path on earth must always further "integral human development" for all. - Richard C.
I read the encyclical at the Vatican website. It is incredibly rich, dense (in a positive sense) and worthy of reading and contemplation on Summer holiday. Although it is impossible to digest every nuance from a first reading, the most remarkable takeaway for me is that the encyclical's complexity is perfectly in sync with the utter simplicity of our Lord's primary commandment to love God and love one's neighbor.
Thanks to TCT for this timely presentation. Having not read this encyclical yet, and anticipating no easy task in trying to understand it, the insight of these authors is a valuable gift. This is one of TCT's best yet. - Willie
