Brother Frank

Reform Now! My brother Frank died in a Catholic hospital this year. It was not the government who pressured him into signing consent to a Do Not Resuscitate order. His own daughters helped him choose death instead of life. God blessed Frank with Catholic hospital admission, Catholic doctors and Catholic pastoral care. But Frank had no assets and no insurance. His death will be paid through insurance rate increases and doctor and hospital tax write-offs. We can do better for future Franks. - Diana Hall

"I do not believe he simply intends socialist-style control"... "In my judgment, Obama sincerely believes that a large government role and ultimately a single-payer system is the best way to organize medical services"... These two statements are in consecutive sentences. Huh???
Also, when bureaucrats decide whether or not you are worth the $ required for cancer treatment (for example), the term "death panels" will be appropriate. Most consider JPII's "culture of death" an extremist term. - William

The all-important point in this essay is Mr. Royal comment that he "does not believe health care is best defines as a right." I agree. And even if it is in some respects a "right," I don't believe it follows that government needs to provide it. As others have said, the "right" to bear arms does not imply that the government needs to buy us all a weapon. - John Mccarthy

Chuck- You hit the nail right on the head. Why is it we don\t hear about the massive salaries of the Insurance company CEO? Why isn't tort reform being discussed.? It is because the trial lawyers are in bed with the insurance companies and most of your legislators and politicians are lawyers? I think the answer is yes. Unless you stop this parasitic feast you will not solve the health care crisis! Trial lawyers and insurance companies don't know the meaning of subsidiarity nor do they want to - Willie

Principle of Equality

The need for reform emerges from the escalating cost of health care. Most of that cost has been fueled by (1) ambulance chasers (tort law) (2) liberal judges and juries that allow outrageous compensation (3) insurance companies dominating entire markets by means of virtual monopolies or "duopolis" (like the Pepsi/Coke type where RC has no real chance to compete). Eliminate capricious litigation, allow people+doctors to form useful associations. Then watch it fix itself. - Chuck

I do not believe he simply intends socialist-style control or “death panels” .... In my judgment, Obama sincerely believes that a large government role and – though he’s been reserved about it – ultimately a single-payer system is the best way to ...

You give the President far more credit than he deserves. HR 3200 does NOT include "conscience protection," and it DOES require taxpayer support of abortions. Beyond that, the bill proposes to institute and fund "family advisors"... - L A Stich

A Mess

Intriging piece, unfortunetly it fueled my pessimism rather than hope. True the healthcare system is a mess and on both sides we hear nothing but non-specifics. I agree we don't need anymore intrusion into patient-doctor relationships by way of State control and Obamacare. It is bad enough. Multiple competing providers sounds like the correct way to go, but what is "proper federal legislation?" Of course if we all learn to develop a "sensable conscience," we don't have to worry about abortion. - Willie

Will Democracy survive this reform? On the Today Show, Shumer proclaimed that the Health Care reforms could be pushed through the Senate with 50%---not a majority---because of some loop hole and this was discussed, with if not endorsed by President Obama.
Also bemoaned were the passions flaring at the "town hall" meetings.
Apparently americans are not supposed to voice opposition to Obamas agenda
Majority rule in the Senate? Town Hall meetings as a rubber stamp political agendas? Democracy - John Kasaian
