old memories

Maybe the Swiss remembered a time in history that they didn't even know that they knew: the Battle of Vienna, the Battle of Lepanto, the 700 years of Muslim oppression of Spain. Maybe the sight of the minaret awakened something deep in their memories, and, without knowing exactly why, they reacted to defend against something that they didn't know they knew. - Maggie

The Symbols

If it weren't for all these wonderful symbols, why, Dan Brown would be writing ad copy instead of enjoying his millions from The DaVinci Code and other books that exploit religious iconography. Less facetiously, one might add that the Cross has always been the great Stumbling Block to both Jew and Gentle who finding the image a disturbing representation of God's suffering and Man's. "The Cross is evil at its worst and Goodness at its best," Bishop Sheen said. A reminder of an unpaid bill. - Joseph

To Efface a Culture

The European Union lawmakers have a precedent to which they can refer. In North Korea all historic symbols of Korean culture have been destroyed. This was done to destroy the cultural soul of the Korean people, to break their spirit, and remake them in the image of the new ideology. Very interesting. - Ars Artium

Hope for Christendom

Excellent. piece as it dovetails well with the piece on Ireland As Europe wallows in the quagmire of secular humanism and relativism is grows weaker and confused. Its identity is frustrated by the atheism as well as the mindset of the Saracen immigrant..For sure European identity will get no better under the leadership of the present leaders of the EU. I think there are some hopeful signs as frustrated countries speak out. The influence of Benedict XVI may be more powerful than some think. - Willie
