I read this article with great interest, but I still think something is wrong with Japanese understanding of Christianity: most of them (so it seems in pop culture) see Christian faith as an exotic element and show no respenct in using crosses and other elements for their television products. I think they should inform themselves better. - Andrew Fisher

According to Paul Johnson's History of Christianity, Catholics were fiercely persecuted almost to the point of extermination in Japan's remote past; forced underground in the 17th century and reemerging in the mid 19th. If we are going to discuss Japan's attitude toward Christianity we might want to consider what has been added or subtracted from her since that time. - Xavier

Thank you, Achilles. Nothing like going and seeing Japan in person to understand things.

I am not familiar with George Friedman's argument. But I can't think of any scenario where Japan would attack the USA (again) as anything but "crazy talk," as you put it. From what we know as of now, Japan has a very close, positive military relationship with us, shared democratic values, and sees threats in the Pacific largely as we do. Perhaps Friedman confused Japan for PRC? - Kevin M Doak

I've been listening to "The Next 100 Years" by George Friedman. He foresees Japan allying with the Chinese, and Siberian, merchant classes, not their central governments, and gradually asserting greater control. Ultimately, he sees it leading to Japan pre-emptively striking us (~2050) to force concession of naval control of the Pacific Rim. "Friedman crazy talk" or do we see "step-by-step" in this story? - Tom Brennan

Thank you Professor for a very interesting article. I spent a month in Japan once, untethered to anyone. - Achilles
