As someone who has had that unexpected and undeserved moment of bestowed faith -- at Holy Thursday evening mass before my confirmation at Easter Vigil -- I'm still amazed at how quickly it can be subsumed in skepticism. What a work is Man! And yet, the memory and the moment always come back and are always there. Perhaps because my own religious roots are also Anglican, I appreciate both Msgr. Benson's faith and skepticism and faith again. My own growing devotion to the Blessed Virgin is another surprise even as it feels perfectly natural. Thanks again to Mr. Miner for an essay that seems particularly at home at The Catholic Thing. Last note: I may be older than Mr. Miner -- I actually remember seeing the old Loretta Young Show if only in syndication as a young babyboomer. It's one of the few shows that sticks in my mind as exceptionally written and acted and watchable today. Ms. Young was beautiful -- and knew it -- but her consistent taste in material bespoke an intelligence rare in Hollywood. THE BISHOP'S WIFE remains one of my favorte Christmas movies. Her last film was a made-for-TV Christmas movie also starring the late and grand Trevor Howard in one of his last roles. I highly recommend his portrayal as an Irish abbot in spiritual crisis in the movie CATHOLICS based on Brian Moore's novella of the same name. - Graham Combs
