Dan, urging Chavez toward conversion is a good idea. Abandoning socialism and its destructive effects on society would be a good first step on Chavez's road to Damascus.

On the plus side, Chavez reminds us that things could be worse than they are in the U.S. with our own Narcissist-in-Chief in Oval Office. - Mark

Like Lenin, he is bound for a tomb, though in his case it probably won't have post regime utility as a tourist site. - Yezhov

Very interesting article. Why isn't there more on Chavez in the Catholic press?
You mention a few Americans who "have turned a blind eye" and "have ignored" some of his dangerous friends. Perhaps these Americans like him because of his friends?
Also, you mention the Venezuelan bishops' opposition to Chavez. It is good that they oppose him, but, at least from the comments you mention, they oppose him for his political programs. Perhaps they might encourage him to follow Jesus, to become a Christian, to join the Church.

In listing notable Chavez apologists, you have overlooked the imprimatur authored with enthusiasm by Jimmy Carter. - Ray Hunkins

George, it's worth mentioning that Americans pay state-run CITGO of Venezuela $10 billion in oil revenues annually. Perhaps Hugo holds a little secret love for his nasty neighbors to the north. - Joe
