Family planning is not "getting rid of people" in any sense when it comes to contraception. As to whether this is philanthropic, surveys (such as the Demographic and Health Surveys) consistently show the poor in many countries wish they had smaller families. Having a smaller family means parents can concentrate more resources on fewer children which means better education, health, etc.

In terms of development, it's low-hanging fruit. - Mark

All the NGOs no matter how small want to get their hands on the Gates money. few think deeply about the matter and many are willing to overlook these things.

Melinda Gates (it is the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation) is apparently a Catholic. If so, maybe she has not been approached or chatechized...or maybe she she is just adamant in supporting this no matter what. Curious - Ray Atherton

To help sharpen the Gates/Buffet perspective, keep in mind that they only want to help reduce the number of children born to unacceptable parents. Well-heeled liberals, especially white ones, can still have children (but not too many, of course). The poor, especially the poor who have darker skin, need to get with the eugenics program and stop breeding. - Mark

Mr. Hanley, thank you so much for such an informative column. I disagreed with Gates and Buffet approach from the beginning (money does not solve fundamental human issues) but I had no idea that they donated so much money towards Planned Parenthood. How appalling and sterile! - Emina Melonic

If these funds were used to develop programs intended to disinter the concept of lifelong marriage and family as a great and joyful life project and then to educate young married couples in Natural Family Planning, the outcome would not only regulate fertility within families for whatever serious reasons may require that but also would restore human dignity. - Bangwell Putt
