One sad side-effect of the last election -- which makes the Democratic party seem ever more the "Party of Abortion" -- is the defeat of the following pro-life Democrats:
Congressman Alan Mollohan (D-WV);
Congressman Barry Bright (D-AL);
Congressman Chris Carney (D-PA);
Congressman Travis Childers (D-MS);
Congresswoman Kathy Dahlkemper (D-PA);
Congressman Lincoln Davis (D-TN);
Congressman Steve Dreihaus (D-OH);
Congressman Brad Ellsworth (D-IN);
Congressman Barron Hill (D-OH);
Congressman Paul Kanjorski (D-PA);
Congressman Jim Marshall (D-GA);
Congressman Charlie Melancon (D-LA);
Congressman Jim Oberstar (D-MN);
Congressman Ike Skelton (D-MO);
Congressman Gene Taylor (D-MS);
Congressman Charlie Wilson (D-OH).

Mr. Deeny touches on the part of the problem that I didn't have the space to deal with in this column. But the decision of the Court in sustaining the bill on partial-birth abortion in 2007 has the effect of inviting a fresh series of pro-life measures emanating from the States. And now, with the recent election, we have about 682 new Republican members of legislatures, many of them pro-life. That brings a new energy and perhaps a new imagination in bringing forth the measures that can be weighed--and sustained--by the Court. But on that, more in a later column. Mr. Deeny aptly anticipated me. - Hadley Arkes

One tires of hearing about the foolishness of "one issue politics." I understand that Mussolini made the trains run on time, but REALLY! Some issues really ARE weightier than others, and abortion trumps the minimum wage every time. - Billy Bean

Excellent article. Please write an article sometime on what can be done at the state level. - Dan Deeny

All well and good, Professor, but even with the hefty GOP gains in the House and state legislatures, the lefty in the Oval Office who wields the veto pen will, with a mere stroke, be able to defeat repeal. Nonetheless, come January 20, 2013 when a new Republican president is sworn in, the scenario you paint becomes much more realistic.

Meanwhile, it does no harm to chip around the edges of Obamacare and perhaps win a small victory here or there, but for now it appears the pro-abortion (a more apt description than pro-choice) faction will hold sway. - Joe
