The Jack Benny Show joke is an interesting set-up.  But what if the announcer, Don Wilson had been black?  Would the crowd have laughed as Jack and the band leader Phil Harris joked about shooting an apple off of his head then?  I suspect that even in the 40s it would have been very uneasy laughter, if at all.  America was in the process of shedding its racism and such a joke in public would have been in very bad taste.

Given the recent and rapid transition of our views on abortion and all things related and the tension when such things are discussed I don't think the flat response you anticipated would have necessarily been because the students &quot;didn't get it&quot;.  Natural Law continues to echo in the mind and heart, albeit less resoundingly, but for today's young it is redacted through turgid ideologies.

BTW I always look forward to your column.  It gives me courage to stick my chin out.
