Ray, Biden, who considers himself Catholic, just came out for same-sex marriage. Imagine on Christmas Eve, making such a pronouncement. Had I the resources, I would move to Europe tomorrow. - Grump

The central irony goes un-remarked. Contemporaries have declared freedom from oppressive family relationships, only to have those relationships assumed by distant and haughty politicians. We have traded our actual mommies and daddies for public figures who tell us when we have had too many sweets, who tell us not to smoke, who give us our allowance, who tell us what we can say (and think), who define - not social contracts, but morality for us, who tell us who we have to play with, who tell us we must share our toys, who tell us we have to clean up our rooms... We are trading our patrimony for patrimonialism. It isn't going to make the people happy. In the meantime, Merry Christmas to all who touch and are touched by this site! - Other Joe
