Mr. Marlin, Why do you think Mr. Shriver was so easily persuaded to abandon his own political or career ambitions and conceded to the will of his father-in-law, and where was Eunice's support for her husband? I found that to be very curious. - Louise

CNN put up a wonderful portion of Mark Shriver's eulogy for his dad that highlighted his attendance at daily Mass. You can find it if you google "Sargent Shriver's 'love affair with God'"

sorry- i just can't let a remark against one of my "Fathers" to go without a NJ response, i.e., my eyes are squinted, my head is shaking in the NO direction, my lips are pursed, and here comes the sigh before the voice:
bill - may the Lord Jesus spare me from such "epiphanies" now and forever! how does your comment fulfill the "whole of the Law" as declared by our Lord? wow! i wonder if Jesus consulted an Official Book of Names before choosing "Peter" or was He sanctifying the landscaping (the Rock that was jutting out of the mountain at the precise location where Jesus declares Simon's NEW NAME)? i can't wait for Archbishop Fulton Sheen's canonization! my 12 yr old son is already considering this great Saint of God as his confirmation Saint. i pray that my Joseph Peter will mature so as to mirror the manly love, devotion, joy and evangelistic mission that Fulton Sheen modeled. Fulton J Sheen, please pray for us-ALL! - debby

Thank you for a well researched and informative piece, Mr. Marlin. I was not going to reply until I had an epiphany. A large source of the problem with Catholics in this country is they prefer to be Main Line Americans, i.e., Protestant. How else to explain their preference for the Anglo Saxon practice of using a family name as their first, in lieu of using their saint's name? Sargent (Robert) Shriver and Fulton (Peter) Sheen come to mind. - Bill
