excellent, excellent!
and the light pierced the darkness and the darkness could not overcome the light.....
if only we would remain in the Light, unafraid to be perched on a pinnacle rather than cowering under the couch.
Light always wins!

Actually modern man has an outlook closer akin to an Imperial courtier then that of a centurion who had spent years fighting the barbarians in the east. - jason taylor

Professor Esolen, What an excellent summary of what we as a society have become, and thank you for the glimmer of what you see as a curative.

And yet there is more than hope - there is the assurance of things hoped for!

I connect this with a recent column by George Marlin on the "French Revolution and The Church," and the insightful comment by Richard A, that Jesus commanded The Church to be "on offense" against the forces of evil and disintegration, and Jesus promised that "the gates of hell" cannot withstand the force of the Church.

We have more than mere reasons to be "happy warriors," we have the assurance of Jesus Christ! - Chris in Maryland

Wow! Please keep writing-I'm always looking for ways to explain things to my three teenage daughters. You are so much more articulate than I could ever hope to be. I'll continue to look to your writing for help! - Kathleen
