@Manfred

It seems to me that slavery and abortion cannot be justified from the Catholic perspective and that they are examples of what the Holy Father is talking about, a prioritizing of the irrational over the rational.

@ Mr. Reilly

Thank you for your article. I enjoyed it! - John

"Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." "Democracy...while it lasts is more bloody than either aristocracy or monarchy." John Adams, President, U.S. of America. The whole purpose of the "war" on Islam is to create a bogeyman outside the castle so we don't realize the real bogeymen are inside the castle. They allegedly don't treat women well? We had slaves in this Country for hundreds of years! Abortion is almost unknown among Muslims and we have aborted 53 million Americans. And we set ourselves up as the secular conscience? "The masses see things the way they appear. The cognoscenti (the informed) see things the way they really are." Macchiavelli - Manfred

Jihad has killed uncounted millions of people (innocent if their only crime is to be an infidel) over the centuries. The Western Democracies have a pretty good record in comparison. Germany up to the end of the Nazi regime and the Soviet Union cannot be counted as democracies. The issue is one of respect for the inviolable dignity of each individual whether infidel or part of the tribe. This value comes from the Greeks as interpreted by the Judeo-Christian tradition and is the basis of Western Democracy. The 21st century seems as if it will be the time to assay this issue once again and either dump it out or restore it to its historic primacy. There is a strong drift toward totalitarian solutions worldwide. Those who don't believe in a loving God of reason are more easily persuaded to accept the primacy of the state. - Other Joe

The constant and clear Islamic doctrine about the inferiority of women is an indispensable bellwether. There is no basis in Islam for belief in the “the inviolable dignity of every single person,” which is a prerequisite for viable democracy. - Howard Kainz

Would any of the readers enjoy being a Palestinian? Even for a day? The U.S. lost over 4,000 dead military, 33,000 wounded, killed over 100,000 Iraqis and spent billions of our treasury in Iraq and our government refuses to tell us the real reason they did it. Did you see the photo of Obama meeting Gaddafi? Did you see the videos of Gaddafi's end (literally!)? Do you realize those rebels had been armed and trained for years by "NATO" (read the U.S.)? What do you think has killed more innocent people in this world, Western Democracy or Shariah? - Manfred
