Anyone niaive enough to believe that unions have outlived their usefulness has (a.)never been within a job requiring union protection (yes, for reasons other than turn-of-the-20th Century reasons) OR (b.)is simply an insulated apologist for those untouchable Wall St. 'paper-pushers' (w/dubious value-added qualities) who wouldn't know the need for unionism if they stumbled across it.
Note: except when occasionally exploiting union retirement funds (see recent FOX % News editorial on such a sordid happening)....Can we please cease & desist w/the characerture of redundant unionism a la/via extreme example and understand the need to put principal above personality within the workplace? - James McHale

But soft! Do you mean to imply that greed can cross party lines? What a radical thought! - Other Joe

Amen to Dr. Marlin and Thos. Coleman, to which I would add: "union dues also go to support things that faithful members of the Catholic Church also deplore." - Chris in Maryland

Dear Dr. Marlin, Thank you for this important history lesson and perspective on the current realities of unions. many educated Catholics still hold a vision of America as filled with sweat shops where people would be payed barely a living wage if it weren't for unions. Few realize that the greatest number number of unnion memebers are public sector employees whose union dues go to suppport things that the union memebers themselves deplore. - Thomas C. Coleman, Jr.
