Just for varieties sake could someone please stop using Ghandi as an example the ultimate in human virtue? Aside from the fact that it is tedious, the real Ghandi was not nearly as nice a person as the legend. - jason taylor

Dr Smith, this is a nice article, and you've put your finger right at the core of the challenge: we Catholics need to stand in greater solidarity with those whom we call, impelled by the Lord, to repentance. We need to invite people to Mass, and to Confession, and to Adoration; but we also need to invite them to coffee, too. In your example, young girls get into trouble because there is a clear absence of effective love in their lives, so they look for it in all the wrong places, as the song goes. Those of us who know the love of God have to share the love of God. And, speaking for myself, I continue to learn and need to learn that His ways are not my ways, my priorities are not necessarily His priorities. May the Holy Family raise up married couples who are able effectively to live, model, and share the love of God with those in need. Ironically enough, the only way for us to have oil in our lamp when the Bridegroom comes is to have given a good portion of it away before the evening falls. As Advent tells us, it is time to wake up.
