AP reporters Martin Crutsinger and Marcy Gordon wrote "Greenspan acknowledged he had made a mistake in belieiving that banks, operating in their own self interest, would do what was necessry to protect their shareholders and institutions". If the Federal Reserve is insulated from pollitical influences, his admission seems to point toward a failure of apolitical government regulation and a moral -cultural failure by bank officers and directors -- as opposed to overly-excited potential homeowners - D.
I disagree with the notion that a the "Neo-Conservative" movement has any roots in liberal thought. The Social Democratic Party in Latin America, for example is the equivalent, perhaps slightly left, of the Democratic Party in the USA. Also, the invisible hand that controls capitalistic economies is VERY latent - often amiss because the system requires the absurd ideas that (a) the market will take care of itself and that (b) the individual good is as important (or more) than the common good. - Gonzalo

Usually, the Republicans favor deregulation. But in this case, the Democrats led by Senator Chris Dodd and Congressman Barney Frank blocked attempts to regulate Fannie and Freddie...That was the key political failure, which brought the whole house of cards tumbling down these past few weeks.

I don't get why McCain hasn't managed to make a bigger issue of that. The economic meltdown contines to benefit Obama, one of Fan and Fred's biggest beneficiaries. - Michael Liccione
