Life, in the absence of neccessity, allowed men to avoid Augustinian realism. Necessity is making a comeback.--imo.

Neat little article. 'Hyperpower' is a better word than 'superpower', as it connotes an a certain madness.--an unstable craving for stability--or something--like the stables of King Solomon.--imo.

Would have guessed that that quote from our Holy Father had come from the 80's or 90's, rather than as early as 1969. That guy has insight.--imo.

The denial of a common human nature in favor of a self-defined human nature imposes a loneliness and isolation on men that they must eventually reject--or am I just trying to sound smart?

dear Fr.!
Thank you so for your Augustinian Realism! Your last paragraph is the most succinct definition of what a Real Christian is that I have ever read. My 24 yr old daughter and I were just having this conversation last week--her generation: the New Martyrs and new Evangelists. I now understand that I am not a spiritual schizophrenic (an optimist living in a pessimistic world) but a daughter of Augustine. Always did love that man! I'm printing this article for quick and frequent review. - debby

Hope I don't take away sales from the print edition. But for those who have Kindle (or download the free e-reader for pc's from amazon)The Lord of The World by Fr Benson is available free as a e-book. BTW so are many Classic Books. - Tom B

"Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? And how do you see it now? Is it not in your sight as nothing? Yet now take courage...; work, for I am with you. . . . The latter splendor of this house shall be greater than the former, says the Lord of hosts" Haggai 2.

I note a reference to Msgr. Robert Hugh Benson's
Lord of the World. I should like to point out that it was republished by The Neumann Press, has sold many thousands of copies, and currently is still in print and readily available from that publisher.
Interesting article, and may well prove to be correct! - Jim

Excellent article, and very apt for our current dilemmas in the Church in America. "Lord of the World" is definitely a must-read. My parish priest recommended it to me, along with Solovyov ("War, Progress, and the End of History" - it dovetails perfectly with the message of "Lord of the World"). - Matt

I'd like to point out to those above that Fatima is private revelation. No one, including any relevant Church officials, has an obligation to believe it or follow its instructions. The apocalypse will not be rushed in because of any issues with the 3rd secret. - Joe

M+ Persecution of the Church? You bet! Was it Cardinal George who recently said "I will die in my bed; my successor will be in prison; his successor will be a martyr." For those who have eyes to see..... - Fr. Chuck

The quotation is from "Faith and the Future", by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, published in 1969, in the wake of widespread dissent within the Church, most notably from the Canadian bishops in their infamous "Winnipeg Statement" from the teachings expressed in Paul VI's Humanae Vitae. - Gibbons Burke

Quick question-- I was wondering what source the quotes from Pope Benedict were taken? I'd like to read it.

Thanks! - Melissa

The single greatest fact, which in my opinion cannot be denied, is that the popes and hierarchy of the Church refused to release the Third Secret of Fatima, which the Blessed Mother through Sr. Lucia, ordered done no later than 1960. The "secret", released in 2000 and defended by Cdl Bertone, including his insistence that it dealt with the 1981 assassination attempt on JP II, was so ridiculous that he was laughed to scorn. Sr. Lucia warned that we must read the Gospel and the Apocalypse! Each day as we witness the apostasy of the hierarchy, the incompetence of the Church in the U.S. to deal with the dissidents it has allowed to flourish in its midst as well as the Obama administration, one does not get a feeling of confidence. As Leo Strauss, the Jew who fled Nazi Germany reminded us-Adolf Hitler was elected! - Manfred
