Manfred you ask, "...what precisely does one have to accomplish in order to save one's soul?"

One must learn to love, even love of one's enemies. Jesus Christ (through the Catholic Church) gives us the 7 sacraments to help us accomplish this. Spiritual fitness (the ability to love) can be compared with physical fitness. Baptism and Confirmation are like joining the gym, Reconciliation is like getting back to the gym or getting back on the right exercise program when you’ve gone off track, the Eucharist is a combination of the perfect, healthy diet and coaching from the best fitness trainer, Marriage is like a doing a super hard workout every day, Holy Orders is like a workout program for Olympic athletes, and Extreme Unction is either like an operation to get you healthy again or a preparation to transfer your gym membership to another gym. - Mark

All through this piece the word "Christian" is used. In Mr. Woods piece yesterday, he noted that his subject, Whittaker Chambers, became a Quaker after his years as a communist and therefore experienced a "Christian transformation". Is it important that anyone be a Catholic? After we get through all the vague and flowery terms, what precisely does one have to accomplish in order to save one's soul? It is the fiftieth anniversary of the start of Vat. II and Catholicism before that time required study, readings and memorization. Now it is just flaccid "feelings". It really has nothing left to say. Bright people have understood this for decades. - Manfred
