In the Daily Telegraph I recently read the obituary of an Anglican vicar who famously used the wicket in the game of cricket to explain the Trinity. In my parish Monsignor is somewhat sports mad in its intellectual tradition. (Recall fan is short for fanatic -- but it's a harmless fanaticism.)

Nick Palmer's question has strong resonance in a culture that emphasizes the individual. And in an country where community is often unstable. Consequently perhaps we have come to resent agency. Especially of the Divine Variety. Too bad. - Graham Combs

An interesting piece. Who has won the Tour de France the most times? Was it Lance Armstrong? I hope some of his former domestiques are available to assist his divorced Catholic wife Kristin and their three children. Training in Girona, Spain for months each year while his family lived in Austin, TX took its toal. Now it appears he will be stripped of all his awards for doping. Much struggling and striving for nada, niente, zero. I believe the timeless Catholic philosophy is: Moderation in all things. Thank you for introducing readers such as myself into an arcane world. - Manfred

Enjoyed this, Austin. Too bad the doping scandals have ruined the sport. Same with the Olympics when only amateurs used to compete. Nowadays athletes are walking billboards. - Grump

Why does God work through others? Why do I have a guardian angel? Can't God help me directly? After all, he's all powerful.

Maybe, just maybe God works through others not so much for me as for them... When I think of the pleasure I derive from helping one of my children, holding a door for someone, caring for a sick relative. Sure the recipient gets help and joy. But, God could have given that help and joy directly. But then I would not have had the opportunity to experience the selfless joy of giving (in my case, perhaps not so totally selfless, but I'm trying). - Nick Palmer
