We have too many Jerry Brown, Joe Biden Catholics voting out there. They have been conditioned by the Vatican II influenced schools where their attitudes toward social mores are similar to those of public school alumni. Their diocesan leaders have been strong supporters of illegal immigration, encourage tolerance of the "gay rights" agenda (taught by progressive "priests" and "nuns"), and equate socialism with social justice............all anti-Catholic principles entirely! They readily supported Obama overwhelmingly in the previous election simply because they share the same flawed values. We have both Protestant and Mormon candidates who support basic Christian values that are in line with Catholic tradition than do many of the C&E "catholics" who are eligible to vote. May our Holy Father inspire reform of what was once the finest system of primary and secondary schooling. The Church's future is dependent upon it. - Stan J

Excellent article, George. Let's hope Romney incorporates your recommendations into his arguments. Too much is at stake for our fellow citizens, especially Catholics, for Romney not to have a superlatively effective performance. Isn't it also time for our bishops to speak out clearly, decisively, and fearlessly against re-election of Obama along the same lines as you recommend to Romney? - Seanachie

       fine with Romney.

Can a Mormon really sincerely espouse the tenets of faith and morals necessary to lead and inspire a Christian opposition? I don't relate to him at all. - Alex

Perceptive piece, Mr.Marlin. I would add only this for consideration: There are plenty of folks who have come to the conclusion, some reluctantly and with much angst, that Gov. Romney is a full spectrum conservative. But some are still skeptical, and most of his new found conservative supporters will be looking for signs of backsliding and inconsistency. It wasn't easy for the Governor to win these folks' loyalty but it will be easy to loose it if he shows less than enthusiastic commitment to positions which are important to conservatives. The debate is an opportunity for the Governor to cement conservative support and I hope, and believe, that he will do it. - Ray Hunkins

Frank,

All O has to say back to Romney is that Cdl. Dolan blessed his convention and Romney must be trying to be more Catholic than the Cardinal.

O. can repeat this strategy right down the list - abortion, homosexual marriage, NDAA, etc - he's covered by Romney's pathetic stands at every corner. No, Romney doesn't have the infanticide image to beat down, but if you really believe abortion takes a human life, infanticide is just a matter of degree of evil. And O. has already won an election as an infanticide-acceptor anyway.

Tonight's debate is just a kabuki show - bread and circuses for the masses.

Mr. Marlin,

As a product of situational poverty in my youth, I suggest that the use of "blue collar" seems a bit patronizing. - Mack Hall

If I were Romney, I'd ask Obama why God got kicked out of the Democratic Convention and then let back in. Or he could ask, "Gee Mr. President since this was you convention, are you ashamed of God?

only one in four people are catholic and 50% will
vote democrat,to reinforce my arguement that "CHANGE"
needs to be the message!

Mr Marlin,
More than all you listed (and I totally agree)Romney
needs to convince all Christians that"CHANGE" is what is needed.
Doma, contraceptives,HHS mandate are all important but not "ONE"
are a game changer.I want Romney to speak to all Christians!
We must remember we are in the minority as Catholics,so
he must show "Broad and Bold" Contrasts.
Romney has just tonight to show he can turn this around.
Fact is obama is winning the "PR" war.A compelling reason
"CHANGE" is what Romney needs to show.
