No Such Thing

With 30 years of married life behind me, one of the things I have attempted to pass along to my sons, how effectively remains to be seen as two of the three are now married with the youngest about to become engaged, is that there is no such thing as the perfect woman (or man for that matter for you ladies). Only God can fill this. Another person cannot be certain to make us happy but my warning to them is that they can sure make you miserable. May your crosses be from elsewhere. - Guy

I think you are very right in highlighting the danger of constantly looking for the perfect woman and ignoring the terrific ones around us. I once wrote about a similar topic, The Case for Mr. Good Enough, which dealt with women doing similar things.

But it's equally important, once we have our perfect woman, not to sabotage a good thing by reminiscing about past flames -- their qualities or physical attributes -- or persisting fantasies - Alessandro

(continued...) I feel many men can relate to this: Having found (and married) a marvelous woman, only to occasionally think about past relationships -- e.g., certain things that were better or more exciting or just plain different in the past with a different woman.

In a similar fashion to how idealizing a fantasy can prevent us from seeing true beauty around us, perpetuating a fantasy can lead to us losing the one we cherish most.

Btw, I enjoyed The Compleat Gentleman immensely! - Alessandro
