Grace and Truth Came

Our Saviour, dearly-beloved, was born today: let us be glad. For there is no proper place for sadness, when we keep the birthday of the Life, which destroys the fear of mortality and brings to us the joy of promised eternity. No one is kept from sharing in this happiness. There is for all one common measure of joy…He is come to free us all. Let the saint exult in that he draws near to victory. Let the sinner be glad in that he is invited to pardon…. For the Son of God in the fullness of time which the inscrutable depth of the Divine counsel has determined, has taken on him the nature of man, thereby to reconcile it to its Author…. Awake, O Man from sleep, and recognize the dignity of your own nature. Remember that thou are made in the image and likeness of God …. Let us think on what the Divine Grace has bestowed on our nature on the very occasion when we celebrate the mystery of the Lord's birthday. (St. Leo)

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God; all things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made.   In him was life, and the life was the light of men….The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.   The true light that enlightens every man was coming into the world.   He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world knew him not.   He came to his own home, and his own people received him not.   But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God; who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.   And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth….For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ
