When the pope abolished the Index of Forbidden Books

In establishing the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Pope Paul VI gave the congregation the duty of “carefully examin[ing] books that have been reported”, etc., but he made no mention of the status of the Index of Prohibited Books.[The clarification by the CDF, issued in response to queries, stated that the Index with its associated penalties would no longer be in force; however, the safeguarding of faith and morals from harmful publications, would remain a duty of the pastors of the Church as a part of the natural law.
