In his desire for ecumenical harmony, the pope’s historical formulations do little justice to key actors and factors involved in the Reformation and in Catholic missionary efforts. They instrumentalize history, rather than take a receptive posture toward history’s lessons, in order to advance agendas of the present moment. [1]
