At the Boys’ Latin school in Philadelphia, an African-American institution in the midst of poverty and failure, students succeed — in large measure because they learn the Dead Language. Says the head of school: “Nobody expects black boys to do Latin, because it’s hard. And that’s exactly why we do it.”
