The U.S. Constitution says nothing about God, although it is understood to protect religious liberty. However, every single state constitution makes reference either to God, specifically, or to the Supreme being or ruler — or asks for divine guidance. Some constitutions even prohibit atheists from holding public office, but that’s a prohibition honored more in the breach. [1]
