There at least three reasons that Pope Francis cannot provide a Lérinian justification for the abolition of capital punishment as a matter of doctrinal development. Clearly, Francis’s position involves change and not progress. Thus, the pope will have to find another way to justify his call for abolishing the death penalty. [1]
