The Church has always held that capital punishment is appropriate in some, rare cases. Pope Francis recently appears to have challenged that understanding, and he is supported by many who hold the death penalty to be inherently unjust. However, it’s clear that any actual change in Church teaching would contradict all previous popes, including St. John Paul II. [1]
