A pope — as the head of the college of bishops, is the principle of the Church’s unity in the truth — has the mission to preserve the truth of revelation and to establish new conceptual formulations of the creed where necessary. But he cannot add anything to the revelation given to us in Scripture and Tradition, nor can he change the content of previous dogmatic definitions. [1]
