The President of Germany has called for the Catholic Church to allow Protestants to receive Communion. Frank-Walter Steinmeier, a Protestant whose wife is Catholic, says he supports the German bishop’s conference proposal that inter-Communion should be allowed. But as one dissenting German bishop put it, “Public pressure that does not appreciate the depth of the doctrinal issues at stake is very unhelpful.”
