The causes of our culture of death are mysterious. Islamic terrorists have reasons, however malign, for their murderous acts, reasons that arise from a civilizational struggle between Islam and the secular West. By contrast, nobody knows why 58 people were murdered in Las Vegas—or why “deaths by despair” are on the rise, especially among white working-class men. In our secular culture, death seems to have no reason.
