The Press Office says that they are, “aware of and concerned by the confusion that these accusations [about McCarrick] are causing in the conscience of the faithful,” [1] Pope Francis is taking further steps to investigate the scandal. But Cardinal Ouellet’s recent statement defending Francis actually added to the “confusion” of the laity—to the mounting suspicion that the Vatican in general, and the pope in particular, have handled the McCarrick affair very, very badly.
