Germany’s Catholic and Protestant churches each lost over 200,000 members in 2018, and the losses have hit hard, since members of all faiths pay up to 9% of their taxable income in church taxes. Hans Langendörfer, secretary of the German Bishops’ Conference, described the figures as a “worrying” statistic. Projections suggest the situation is only going to get worse.
