Newman’s idea of a university

The gulf between St. John Henry Newman’s vision of Catholic education and what we currently have is stark. He famously described a Catholic University as ‘an Alma Mater, knowing her children one by one, not a foundry, or a mint, or a treadmill.’ Very few schools still pursue the liberal arts with the goal of truly education students.
