It remains to be seen if the Amazon Synod’s move towards ordaining married men (viri probati) goes forward — the final victory of aging Vatican II dissenters. But a new generation of priests contemplates Christ’s own holy virginity and sees not simply a human law but the superiority of holy celibacy as a sacrifice justly ordered to the preaching of Christ’s perfect sacrifice.
