As liberal cities begin forming plan to defund police departments, we might look to writers, “conservative” and “liberal,” who remind us that our liberties and safety depend upon the guardians. Tolkien, Herman Wouk, and Aaron Sorkin all abhor violence and evil but recognize its existence and implications. ^[1]
