On being (and not being) “nice”

From its Latin root, nice originally meant “careless, clumsy, weak, simple, foolish, or stupid.” Maybe we should return the word to its origins, because it is too often used in a reductionist manner that seeks to simplify the entire moral life to being “nice.”
