Vatican art restorer dies at 91

Gianluigi Colalucci, who led what was known as the restoration of the century — the cleaning of the Sistine Chapel — and in so doing revealed a new vision of Michelangelo’s storied, complex work there, died on March 28 in Rome. Mr. Colalucci and his team began the monumental task of cleaning and restoring the chapel in 1980. Their efforts stunned the art world. Michelangelo’s hues were bold, grown dull with age, were clear and bright, with apple greens, startling blues, and rosy peaches. [1]
