Spain’s socialist government intends to use law to cleanse the nation of reference to the Francisco Franco years. The attitude the proposed law reflects is fairly common among the Left everywhere, which increasingly uses governmental or nongovernmental means to restrict and punish speech that defends rightwing views, movements, and figures past or present.
