Beijing operates hundreds of detention camps in the Uyghur province of Xinjiang, and former detainees have reported systemic torture and sexual assault in the camps. A Human Rights Watch report reports that these and other abuses and restrictions on religious and cultural practices have reached “unprecedented levels.” The Vatican refuses to comment.
