U. S. home to 40 percent of all permanent deacons

A recent survey conducted by the USCCB has revealed that the U.S. has more permanent deacons than anywhere else in the world. The study, titled A Portrait of the Permanent Diaconate, examined 145 arch/dioceses whose bishops belong to the USCCB. The city with the largest number of deacons, 852, was found to be Chicago. The Windy City’s deacons more than double the second place city, Los Angeles, where there are 426. The dioceses of Galveston-Houston, San Antonio, and New York each reported over 300 permanent deacons.
