Hundreds of Catholic students, parents, teachers, alumni of Union Catholic High in Scotch Plains, NJ came out to watch the local track legend win gold in Tokyo. Among them were principal Sister Percylee Hart, who sat among current students and waved an American flag, and coach Mike McCabe, who saw the track star’s potential when McLaughlin was just a teenager.
