The current fad of tearing down statutes and condemning the past is almost an American tradition. Our age-old iconoclastic, puritan impulse cannot abide commemorating, memorializing, or showing respect to any institution or person who does not conform to the perfectionist moral paradigm of the moment. Hating humanity is not the answer.
