Lincoln knew that God oversees the affairs of men, whose conflicts and loyalties play a mysterious role in the divine plan. But we are no longer a Christian nation, and today’s moralistic Americans lack Lincoln’s sense of transcendence. Our duty is to make things a little better, not to assume the mantle of secular prophets and rage against the limitations of our fallen humanity. [1]
