The project of saving one’s country from tyranny and decadence can fail. The project of saving the Church from bad prelates and heretics cannot fail. To despair of such salvation – to fret that the problems remain unresolved after ten or fifty or a hundred years – is to sin against the virtues of faith and hope, which demand of us that we take the long view.
