Mark Twain loved Joan of Arc

When Mark Twain wrote a novel about St. Joan of Arc, he left us one of the great conundrums of American literature. Not a Catholic, the great novelist’s retelling of the 15th-century saint’s life took him a decade to research and write, and he called it his favorite book.
