Nicaraguan police imprison bishop

Nicaraguan police on Friday raided the residence of a Roman Catholic bishop who is an outspoken critic of President Daniel Ortega’s government. Bishop Rolando Álvarez of Matagalpa and several other priests, all of whom had been prevented from leaving for two weeks, were removed under cover of darkness from the bishop’s residence. The Sandinista regime also ordered the closure of more than 1,000 nongovernmental institutions, including Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity. [1]
