French groups fight to save St. Michael statue

The recent decision of a French Court of Appeal to confirm the removal of a statue of St. Michael the Archangel from a seaside town has stirred strong reactions across the country and attracted widespread media coverage. Despite the fact that nearly 95 percent voted in favor of its retention, the court has backed the lawsuit of an anti-religion group that says the statute violates laïcité, a French term for secularism.
